Zahnd is another great bouldering area (163-acres) that you will find along Lookout Mountain in northwest Georgia. On a busy day when there are 50 cars in the parking lot at Rocktown, there may be only a few at Zahnd. Yes the climbing is not as primo and the area is smaller than Rocktown, but there is more than enough sweet southern sandstone to keep your interest for a few days.

A hunting or fishing license is required to visit any area within the WMA (Lost Wall, Rocktown, Zahnd). You can buy daily or annual licenses. The best option for climbers include the hunting, fishing or annual lands pass. All licenses include camping.

Hunting Closures: Zahnd is not within the Crockford-Pigeon Mountain hunting closure dates for open fire arms. You can climb here when neighboring Rocktown or Lost Wall are closed during these dates.

What to Expect

Zahnd is characterized by grey rock with neat features and texture. A good portion of the crag has conglomerate pebble, so it is not as friendly as Horse Pens or Rocktown, but is still worthy of a visit. A short 5 minute walk from the parking pull off puts you in a small warmup area and the start of the small cliffline. Zahnd is home to several classic lines such as The Wave, Razors Edge and Harvest Moon.

Access Notes

  • Leave No Trace: Keep this area beautiful and clean. Clean up after yourselves, your peers, and your pets. Lead by example and pick it up on the first pass.
  • Dogs on a leash are welcome
  • All Georgia DNR and WMA rules apply
  • No camping or camp fires
  • Carpool when possible and park only in designated areas
  • All visitors must obtain a hunting or fishing license

Camping

There is no camping at Zahnd, but Rocktown is a short drive away.
